Gaby Paz
Hey guys, we're here with Arantxa and Gabby Paz. It's great to be out here. Thank you so much.
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
You’re welcome. Nice to meet you.
Gaby Paz
So I want to ask you, who’s your go to chef?
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
Wow, that’s difficult because you can only pick one, you know. I love that, you know, good food. I like Spanish food, I like Haitian food, I like Mexican food.
Gaby Paz
Spanish like the Paella’s?
“We have to eat almost, you know, like five meals a day because we are burning so many calories.” - Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
Yes, I’m Spanish so that’s what I have to say but I like everything because I travel so much… that I get to try all kinds of different foods. So around the world you need to get used to it. You have to try everything. You like some more than others but difficult to choose only one. I like food.
Gaby Paz
So what was your prematch food (meal)?
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
Well, most of the time I do have (to eat) a lot of carbohydrates. Like you know, pasta, because it’s better for indigestion and also for energy when we’re playing. But I also like rice and also a lot of fruit.
Gaby Paz
You need a lot of energy so like snacks and bars.
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
We have to eat almost, you know, like five meals a day because we are, burning so many calories. You’re competing meaning that you need to get you something to keep up with your metabolism.
Gaby Paz
But It’s hard to digest.
In Spanish, “Guerra, es una Guerra” (War, it’s a war) - Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
You’re always eating healthy but sometimes you also need to break through that (with other foods).
Gaby Paz
And who on the tour reminds you most of yourself?
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
It’s hard to say, I don't know. Maybe the audience has to say that more than myself? All I can say is that you know I was a fighter. I was really never going to give up on the court. I'm very open you know personality but I never give up.
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
In Spanish, “Guerra, es una Guerra” (War, it’s a war)
Gaby Paz
You're a great example for all the girls growing up right now. Really, you’re an inspiration.
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
Hopefully, those people can say maybe more. Sometimes they say you remember one player or another.
Gaby Paz
Are you still wearing headband when you play right now?
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
Yes, I do because it's my identity you know. And also because you know when you run you're sweating a lot that (pointing at her hair) comes into my face. Some people like to play with a hat or visor. For me, it’s the headband.
Gaby Paz
It’s legendary. You put it in style.
